With regards to how we carry things on a daily basis, such as groceries, the UK is heading in the right direction. We’ve ditched the plastic bags in supermarkets, many high street shops use paper bags now, and many people are buying reusable bags.
This is wonderful! We’re growing more and more concerned about our planet every year and are actually starting to do something about it.
But we can do more.
Instead of using your usual Tesco reusable bags, why not spend a little more and buy a really sturdy (and attractive) bag that does more than just preventing you from constantly using plastic bags?
If you haven’t heard of them before, Jute bags are strong bags made of a vegetable fibre called jute (hence the name), which can be spun into coarse, strong threads.
The brilliant thing about jute is that it’s completely bio-degradable and recyclable. Not only can it be reused, but it is able to be completely broken down instead of potentially ending up rotting for thousands of years in a dump.
My jute bags (sold on this website here) don’t just help the environment though.
They’re handmade and printed in Kolkata, India. Each sale of one of these bags help self-help groups in Kolkata and give poor women there the opportunity of employment and a better life.
Not only will you be doing your bit to save the planet, but you can also be sure that your money is going towards a truly magnificent cause.
